Ancient House

Hoi An's old quarter is stacked with preserved merchant houses, and the generic 'ancient house' listings all point to the same experience: a narrow timber-fronted home two or three centuries old, opening back through a courtyard to a river or garden door. Expect dark hardwood columns, tiled roofs furred with moss, and family altars still tended daily. Several of these houses are among the five sites your Old Town ticket admits you to. They're worth ducking into between the tailors and cafes — a few cool, quiet minutes that show what the town looked like before the tourists arrived.
