My Son Sanctuary is the formal name for the Cham temple ruins in the hills southwest of Hoi An — a cluster of red-brick Hindu towers built by the Champa kingdom over nearly a thousand years and left half-swallowed by jungle. The carving is the thing: sandstone reliefs of dancers, elephants and the god Shiva, weathered but still sharp in places. Some towers are rubble from wartime bombing, which only adds to the melancholy. Entry includes an electric buggy to the tower groups and a short traditional dance show. Go at opening time for cool air, soft light and space to think.
